Vietnam best travel time depends on the region you want to visit. Vietnam has three different climate zones; north, central Vietnam and the south. We show you the best months to visit Vietnam by climate zone.

Vietnam climate

Due to the elongated form of Vietnam there are major climate differences. The south, and especially the Mekong Delta, has a tropical climate with average temperatures that are relatively constant around 30 ° C. The north is subtropical and over 2000 meters, even a temperate climate. Furthermore Vietnam is located in the monsoon zone of Southeast Asia and the climate zone lies at the height of Da Nang.

Travel time per month

Unfortunately the weather in Vietnam can never be fully predicted. Sometimes you have dry periods during the rainy season and rain a couple of days in a row in the cool, dry season. It can vary per month. To give you a good idea of the best travel time Vietnam, we made a list of travel time per month.

Januari

The good weather returns in Vietnam with dry conditions in a large part of the country. You can enjoy both in the north and south of the sun, while the central part leaves the rainy season behind. That means that the beaches of Hoi An, Da Nang and Nha Trang are good for a visit. There is a difference in the temperature from one side of the country to the other, with the highest temperatures in the south and cooler weather in the north.

Februari

February is one of the best months to travel in Vietnam. The conditions are good with dry, clear weather throughout the country. Beach lovers are good as the southern and central beaches already enjoy the sun. In the north of the country you have tight blue skies with just a little rain. This is also the month for beautiful treks and outdoor activities in the mountains and highlands.

March

Just like February, March is one of the best months to travel in Vietnam. The conditions are good with dry, clear weather throughout the country. Beach lovers are good as the southern and central beaches already enjoy the sun. In the north of the country you have tight blue skies with just a little rain. This is also the month for beautiful treks and outdoor activities in the mountains and highlands.

April

April marks the end of the high season in Vietnam. While the north is now heading back to a hot, wet summer, you can still expect a lot of dry days. The beaches in the central part of the country are still at their best. More rain is starting to fall in the very hot south. You notice from the crowds and prices that the high season is coming to an end.

May

Although the high season ‘officially’ comes to an end, May is one of the better months to travel in Vietnam. The weather is difficult to predict in this month. The central area is doing well, while in the south the rainy season is slowly coming, especially towards the end of the month. The north is also starting to see more rain, although the temperature is rising. It can become hot in the north. All beaches remain a good options, with good weather on the beaches of Hoi An, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc.

June

June is still a good month to travel in Vietnam, despite the fact that the weather is clearly declining. The central part of Vietnam is the warmest and remains dry and clear. The south is now in the middle of the rainy season with daily showers, usually in the afternoon. The north is has with the summer high temperatures and rain. The number of visitors is relatively low, but the beaches in central Vietnam still have a lot of sunshine. Trekking is not a good idea because of the rain in the north. 

July

July is equivalent to June. The central part of Vietnam is the warmest and remains dry and clear. The south is now in the middle of the rainy season with daily showers, usually in the afternoon. The north has high temperatures with rain. The amount of tourist are relatively low, but the beaches in central Vietnam still have sun. It is not very good weather for trekking in the north, because of the rain.

August

The weather in August is very different. The central part of Vietnam remains warm and mostly dry with occasional showers, but by the end of the month there will be more rain. The south is still in the rainy season with daily rain showers. The north still suffers from high temperatures and frequent rain. The number of tourists is relatively low while the beaches in the central part of the beaches still have sunshine. Trekking in most regions is difficult due to the rain.

September

The central part of Vietnam is now also getting more rain, especially towards the end of the month. The conditions in the north are just going in the opposite way with less rain, especially in the direction of October. Conditions in the mountains around Sapa are improving and trekking is a good option. In the south, the weather remains largely unchanged, although rainfall starts to decline at the end of the month.

October

The weather continues to improve in the north with clear skies, less rain and less humidity, compared with the past few months. In the central part there is more rain and you are more likely to have stormy weather. In the south it starts to change again with less rainfall and a more sun. Adventurous activities such as treks in the mountains of the north and the central highlands can be done again.

November

The dry, cooler weather returns in North Vietnam, making November one of the better months to travel. The central regions continue with more rain and stormy weather. In the far south it is a different story with blue skies and sunshine. The beaches of Phu Quoc, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne are at their best, a situation that will last for about six months. It is good weather for adventurous activities such as treks in the mountains of the north and the central highlands.

December

The weather remains good through much Vietnam with optimal conditions in both the north and the south, as well as the central regions. The rain begins to decrease. The beaches of Phu Quoc, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne remain good and by the end of the month Nha Trang is getting better. The conditions are good in the mountains and highlands, although temperatures can be quite low at night.

North Vietnam

Northern Vietnam is farther from the equator and has a mountain landscape. The average temperature is therefore lower than in the rest of the country, especially in the winter months. If you go in the mountains during these months, Sapa for example, you have certainly not enough with just shorts and a T-shirt. In January 2016 it has even snowed in Sapa. Nevertheless, it can be in the North of Vietnam also incredibly hot. From June to August it is the warmest period in Vietnam. October to December are the best months to visit this region. In January it is a bit too cold, February and March are also good times to visit.

Central Vietnam

The temperature in Central Vietnam drops less than in the north, it is almost never cold here. In July and August it can be very warm with temperatures of nearly 40 ° C. Most rain falls here in the fall, but also in other months there is a change for a downpour. The best time to visit here in the spring months.

South Vietnam

In southern Vietnam, the temperature differences are smaller. It will never be as cold as it can be in Hanoi, but in summer the weather is slightly cooler. The rainy season is however more intense and lasts longer; from May to October. During these months you can expect almost every afternoon a heavy rain, the streets in Ho Chi Minh City may even overflow. From December to March is the most comfortable here.

Vietnam best travel time

So what is Vietnam best travel time in general? As said before, there are big differences in climate in Vietnam. In general, the best travel period throughout Vietnam is the period from December to May.  The two best months to visit Vietnam, in our opinion, are February and March. December and January are fine, but especially in January it can be a bit colder in the north.
