The Fansipan mountain is with its 3143 meter the highest mountain in Vietnam and can be climbed in a multi-day hike – preferably in the spring or fall. In summer (June-Aug) you should refrain from an ascent, because the weather is too unstable: then threatened by rain landslides.

Different demanding paths lead up; In total, one to three days of hiking time can be expected. On the way, you sleep at quite tattered campsites in tents. Outstanding mountaineering experience is not needed, but enough sure-footedness and stamina should be brought along. Especially the three-day tour should not be underestimated on its steep passages. After rainfall, all routes are dangerous in some places. A guided tour, costs at least US $ 30-35 per day. Without leaders one should under no circumstances go on the way.

Now also a cable car leads to the summit of the mountain.  Fansipan mountain is part of the 30,000-hectare Hoang Lien National Park, established in 2002 to preserve the region’s rich biodiversity. For some species it was already too late: The tigers and leopards, which used to roam the forests and valleys here, have not been seen for many years. But the park is still the winter quarters for many migratory birds, which are observed between December and February. From November to March rhododendrons bloom in the valleys – at higher altitudes only between July and September. The summer months are also the time of the rice harvest, while in winter (Dec / Jan) is plum season.
